Interventional radiology offers therapeutic solutions where drug treatment is not effective and surgical treatment cannot be applied. This medical specialization uses minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat multiple conditions; the procedures are part of what we call “endovascular surgery” and respond to all the requirements imposed by modern medicine.
Among the parts of the body and the systems that can be treated by an interventional radiologist is the musculoskeletal system (bones, joints, spine).
Periarticular pains are common among the population. They occur mainly in the shoulder and knee area and can vary in intensity from a simple discomfort, to a slight pain or severe pain, which prevents people from carrying out their daily activities. When physical therapy and drug therapy do not work, interventional radiology techniques can be a saving solution for reducing or eliminating periarticular pain.
Radiologists specialized in interventional techniques successfully treat people with periarticular pain both in the shoulder and in the knees and hips. The interventions consist in identifying the periarticular areas with chronic inflammation and vascular congestion followed by their embolization with microparticles. The procedure is relatively new but it is simple, safe and with immediate results. However, this technique does not treat joint diseases, they are solved by orthopedic doctors.
