Dr. Aaron Kovaleski, founder of ECCO Medical, has published new research examining the safety and effectiveness of the Auryon atherectomy system in patients with Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). The study, published in Cardiovascular Revascularization Medicine, is a retrospective review of 55 PAD patients treated with the Auryon system at Dr. Kovaleski’s center between March and December 2020.
Atherectomy — a minimally invasive procedure that removes plaque buildup from artery walls — is an important tool in treating PAD, but existing technologies have carried risks like vessel dissection and embolic events. The Auryon system, developed by AngioDynamics, uses a short-pulse solid-state laser designed to remove plaque more precisely, with a catheter tip built to reduce the risk of vessel injury.
Dr. Kovaleski’s findings were encouraging: procedural success — achieving less than 30% residual narrowing without complications — was reached in 85.5% of patients, with zero procedure-related adverse events or deaths, and only four minor amputations with no major amputations. Patients also needed fewer repeat procedures compared to prior atherectomy technologies studied.
“Prospective, randomized studies comparing different atherectomy technologies are necessary to further validate these results and evaluate long-term outcomes,” Dr. Kovaleski noted, pointing to continued research as the next step.
